Panther

This was on my Christmas list for this year in anticipation of Brecht Evens' new book The City of Belgium. It is not a pleasant story (just ask my mom who read it Christmas morning, not knowing what to expect at all!), but it is well-crafted nonetheless and the art is truly spectacular. The panther himself is ever-evolving in form and color, adding to the uneasiness of the whole tale. Highly recommend.

Spectacularly creepy and well illustrated. The story is a bit vague, and a lot of the story takes place in insinuation. Very thoughtful and well done, but it will make your skin crawl.

Using comics or better yet a style of a children's book to tell a gripping story of preditor and prey is a brilliance matched only by the art work. This is not a story for children. It will leave you uncomfortable and worried.

What starts out as a tale of a kid and her imaginary friend becomes more and more sinister and creepy as the "panther" friend takes many forms . . . mesmerizing!

If I could give this ten stars I would. The most amazing and innovative graphic novel I have ever read!

Wow! What a completely amazing book! The illustrations are a complete delight, full of colour, life and movement. I spent hours pouring over this. The story is quite dark and left me with questions - not a bad thing. It felt uncomfortable at times, but is not without humour too, particularly in the relationship between Pantha and Christine. I loved how the writer/artist captured the movements of a small child (Christine) and how he played around with the image of Pantha, the background setting and other characters. This heightened the sense of everything not being as it should - almost raising a sense of suspicion and mistrust. I loved it - a feast for the eyes and mind!

this book is an absolutely stunning piece of work. the love that has gone into making this is unbelievable. each and every single page is saturated with beautiful illustrations. a true inspiration. get it - you will not regret it!

Cara, esse autor não para de me surpreender... Eu li primeiro o "The making of" e me fez lembrar de artistas que costumam inovar na parte gráfica como Chris Ware e o dash shaw, depois li o "the wrong place" que me fez pensar em artistas que trazem questionamentos relacionados aos nossos relacionamentos como Daniel Clowes e o Vives, nesse ultimo, "panther" ele me fez sentir uma criança, sendo levada para explorar seu mundo fantástico, numa narrativa que faz a gente ficar se perguntando o que é real ou não, numa alegria lúdica e juvenil com um pouco de medo também às vezes, puts maravilhoso! Me fez lembrar, obviamente, do Neil Gaiman! Parece exagerado?! Só leiam esse autor, só leiam...

"Panther" é um dos melhores quadrinhos que já li.Difícil do que começar a falar. A arte é deslumbrante e chama atenção imediatamente pela capa: aquarelas cheias de cores, sabendo dosar perfeitamente a seleção e quantidade para diversos efeitos diferentes. Também há um enquadramento excelente, como de um arquiteto modernista, sem utilizar traços para separar os quadros e variando entre várias possibilidades: páginas splash, vazio, preenchimento completo, objetos apenas delineados, sobreposições, enfim, um deleite visual incrível. E o Pantera do título? Tá aí a maior graça da arte: um metamorfo que (quase) sempre se mantém como uma pantera (o gênero de espécie, não a célebre pantera negra), mas que em todo quadro está diferente do que anteriormente. É algo mágico, e não a toa nossa heroína Christine se encanta pelo personagem.Sobre a história: o que começa como uma espécie de conto fadas, algo que vai aliviar as dores da perda da gatinha de estimação de Christine, vai progressivamente se tornando algo sinistro. Não vale a pena detalhar como isso ocorre pois é uma experiência bem subjetiva, sem delineamentos claros entre ficção e realidade, com muitas sugestões e poucas conclusões. Dessa forma, é possível ter diversas leituras diferentes sobre a obra, com vários argumentos sustentáveis. Essa abertura faz parte do próprio universo imaginativo, especialmente das crianças. Assim sendo, os temas são mais difíceis de apontar pois depende de que tipo de leitura você realiza. Só posso dizer que são densos.Por último, a edição do quadrinho é espetacular. Uma capa dura horizontal, ótima lombada, papel de qualidade, uma página fantástica ao final que se deve abrir para ampliar. Aqui está um raríssimo quadrinho que alinha edição, criatividade, referências, arte e narrativa de forma tão orgânica e excepcional. Vale a pena cada centavo investido.

Qué decir de Brecht Evens... Se reinventa y se supera con cada creación, no parece haber límites par, su capacidad artística y su imaginación, siempre corriendo unaxtras la otra. Esta vez se adentra en el complejísimo mundo de la muerte de un ser querido y el modo en que los humanos tratamos de rellenar el vacío que crea. Si es un niño quien experimenta ese trances, qué decir. Impresionante.
