Easy as... Time Machine
ALL of MY WD "My Passport" for MAC, portable hard drives that I've purchased over the last 8 years have worked straight out of the box without recourse to having to use the bundled WD software. They're sold as MAC and Time Machine compatible. No need to use the WD software. There's no need to even instal the software on your computer. Plug the WD drive into the USB socket on your computer and use Time Machine for backups just by following the Mac OS prompts to make sure you select the correct drive for your Time Machine to target. It's as easy as it gets.I just purchased my fourth such WD drive - a 2Tb version - in it's latest style (as of January 2019). But ALL FOUR of my WD Drives - and those bought by my daughter also - continue to perform perfectly when required. Two are permanently connected to my MAC and in daily use and the other two are offline archives. Oh! - and I also have one (a fifth) in my laptop bag for backups of an old MacBook Pro - still functioning perfectly as required using Time Machine. This month, I ran out of space on my last WD backup drive and Time Machine had started to delete the earliest back-ups from back in 2016. So strategically, I decided it was time for a new one. I had no hesitation in selecting a WD Drive on the strength of my experiences with them to date.As it was the new drive's first backup, I had about 680Gb of files to transfer initially (that's because ALL the files on my MAC needed to be written onto the new (empty) drive). On the only transfer rate I can manage (USB 2 - connected MAC) the transfer took about 11 hours in the background. It didn't interfere at all with my ongoing foreground use of the MAC. Subsequent backups, being incremental backups only, will, of course, take only a few minutes or seconds whenever Time Machine runs automatically thereafter. If my MAC had been a newer version, I guess my transfer rates would have been significantly higher using the USB-C cable connector that comes with the new edition of the WD Drive. (Both are in the box to maintain backward compatibility with earlier machinery - like mine).Although I've only discusses the Time Machine backup compatibility functionality, the WD Drives can of, course, be used for ad hoc data storage and management via the Finder App, alongside any Time Machine back-up folders that are automatically created and assigned drive space by Time Machine.

Doesn't work as a disk drive but...
The first one did not work properly from the beginning - noisy, would not eject, would not always wake from standby, but the worst problem was that it would not allow data to be erased. It was used as a back up drive of my entire Mac - and I was not about to return it for replacement with my entire Mac on it! The Manufacturer suggested connecting it to a Windows machine to see if that would sort it out - yet it was sold as 'For Mac'.Eventually the manufacturer accepted a 'certificate of destruction' and supplied a replacement. This worked well at first, but is currently stuck in standby mode, refusing to wake for storage, refusing to eject... I'll just unplug it and see if works as a doorstop.UPDATE: I contacted the manufacturer again and their advice was to reformat it - so if a brand new drive requires reformatting after only 3 days use, it certainly doesn't bode well for its use as a backup drive!

Saved my day
This is the best hard drive I’ve purchased in my life. It’s compatible with both mac and windows. With the included usb c and usb 3.0 cable, I can easily transfer files between my MacBook Air and the computers at university. Once it’s first arrived I plugged in to my iMac and backed up over night is fast and easy. As it’s time machine ready, all you need to do is just plug in and select back up on your time machine. This is also the best price that you can find on market for 2TB USB type C hard drive.

Can’t trust it.
This drive came ready to use on my Mac. But it uses a WD software app. The lights on this always flash so despite ejecting safely you never feel fully confident that it is actually safe to do so.It also means that in a few years a time the software will probably be out of date meaning the data won’t be able to be accessed. And probably the worst part, today it’s taking me over 4 hours to copy 50GB of data from one hard drive to another which actually never normally takes this long. And no I’m not watching a movie or running anything else at the same time.I’m going back to Seagate.

Sceptical ...
The hard drive smoothly integrated with my MacBook Pro time machine software which is good. However it creates a worrying noise and I am not sure whether it is going to fail me soon. Looking at the product in amazon two days later it sells for £14 more , wonder where artificial intelligence is leading us to !I don’t know whether to return it and buy another for the overnight price rise or wait for it to fail.

Not very good
I hoped this would be plugin and play but it isn’t. Firstly the software wouldn’t download. I tried the alternative suggested approach and now have a couple of superfluous bits of WD software on my iMac. A WD pop up window now leaps out at me every time I sit at my iMac which is annoying. It says you don’t need to partition or reformat the HD if you’re not using it with a PC as well as a Mac. I’ve dragged a few files across to it but they don’t seem to have any content now and the Time Machine back ups don’t seem to work either so overall I wouldn’t recommend this. Why don’t these manufacturers makes an external hard drive that just works out of the box? How hard can it be?

Very easy to instal on a Mac but needs power to work
This is a very small and compact unit. It is easy to set up, more or less automatic, and runs well. The only reservation is that, although it will run directly off a PC or Laptop USB port, if it is connected to a USB hub, that hub must be powered because the drive uses a fair amount of power to operate.

Replacement for Apple Time Capsule
My Apple Time Capsule died the death that they are well known for. I looked around to find a suitable replacement and came across this. It's just the job. It's small, quiet and fast. Much faster than my Apple Time Capsule was. And because it's so small and portable I can just unplug it to use it to add files on manually from any other device, not just the Mac.

WD HDD MY PASSPORT FOR MACのサイトでこのように表記されていました。

Good drive, easy setup; Suggestion: turn off the drive's sleep timer before using with TimeMachine
I've now used this drive for about half a week and so far it is working well. It was already formatted for the Mac, so when I plugged it in there was nothing to do - it mounted automatically (I am running macOS High Sierra, version 10.13.6). I like that there is no separate power supply - it runs off of the power from the USB port. I've connected it both to USB-C on a new Mac and USB-A on an older one, and it works well on both.I am running TimeMachine backups to it, plus I also use CrashPlan and set up the drive as a local destination. In addition, I've copied some large files to a folder on the drive. I've even set up sharing for a folder on the drive to save the TimeMachine backup for another Mac on my home network (see Apple's website for how to do that - you use Sharing in System Preferences). It all works.I did have one issue: the drive has a built-in sleep timer to power down the drive when not in use. This seemed to cause a problem with TimeMachine, which failed when making a backup overnight. I suspected the sleep timer because it is a common feature on many drives, and I've found it can cause problems. I used the WD Drive Utilities app and turned off the sleep timer, and the problem with TimeMachine hasn't recurred. I suspect that the drive's sleep timer is the cause of the many complaints I've seen here about the drive failing almost immediately after the first backup.By the way, the Mac itself has a setting under Energy Saver in System Preferences to put hard disks to sleep, and that is turned on. This setting does put the drive to sleep when not in use, and TimeMachine has no problem waking it up, even when the Mac connected over the network is running a TimeMachine backup. Maybe the real problem is that the Mac's setting to put hard drives to sleep and the drive's sleep timer don't play well together. Western Digital should look into this. The drive comes with an app called WD Discovery, and with that you can download other apps, including WD Drive Utilities. Other than using WD Drive Utilities to turn off the sleep timer, I didn't want to use the other features, and I've set WD Discovery not to run when I boot up.

Never made it worked in exFat for cross compatibility between Mac and PC
Formatted the drive in exFat several time with a Mac and a Pc an I never achieve to have it worked twice in a row... I reformatted and tried over and over for a almost a week and decided to return it.Bought a Seagate instead without any issues. It worked on the first attempts and I have been using it as my main photo repository for the last two week without any issues.

WD una garanzia
Soddisfatto dell’acquisto dell’ennesimo HD Western Digital.
